Our involvement in Syria brings Borderfree full circle. When violence escalated in Syria in 2011, our managing director Vanja Crnojević knew immediately that she wanted to help the people there. She didn't yet know exactly what form that help would take, but the idea stayed with her.
In 2015, she was so moved by the terrible images from the Balkan route that she quickly packed her backpack and traveled alone to the European border to help refugees – including many Syrians – on the Balkan route. This also marked the beginning of Borderfree's journey, which brought us closer to Syria step by step.
In both Serbia and Greece, we worked with people who had fled the civil war in Syria. In Lebanon, the refugee camps in the Bekaa Valley have been one of our main focuses over the last five years: here, too, it is mainly Syrians who have fled the conflict in their home country.
So it is no coincidence that we are now becoming active in Syria. Following the political changes in Syria, the time has come for us to provide direct assistance on the ground.
With the Red Crescent Hospital, we have found a place where we can make a real difference. Vanja is currently in Damascus, where one of her tasks is to register our organization in Syria.
Things don't always move as quickly as she would like. As we all know, the wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly. And sustainable aid takes time. That is precisely why it is now important to build relationships and develop joint strategies for sustainable engagement.
But Borderfree has always been more than just one person's project – we are a movement of many. Together with you, we can close the circle and give hope in Syria.
Be part of our journey.
Help us build in Syria.
