Education for Women and Children in Refugee Camp
Through our protected learning spaces, known as Temporary Learning Spaces, we enable women and children living in the camps to attend classes when they would otherwise have no access to the education system.

The situation
Lebanon hosts the highest number of refugees per capita in the world. Around 1.5 million Syrians live in the country, many of them without official registration, access to healthcare or educational opportunities.
For children living in the refugee camps of the Bekaa Valley, this means no schooling, no safe learning environment and little hope for the future.
A generation is growing up in the camps without access to education and at risk of being permanently excluded from essential academic and everyday life skills.
Our response
Since 2022, Borderfree has been creating protected learning spaces precisely where they are needed: Temporary Learning Spaces, or TLS, located directly inside the camps and close to the families who live there.
They give children the opportunity to attend school every day without dangerous journeys, transport costs or barriers related to documentation or language.
In these spaces, many children learn to read, write and study mathematics and English in a calm environment for the first time. For many of them, it is the only place where they can simply be children.
Temporary Learning Spaces are a simple, effective and locally accepted solution:
They may not be permanent, but they are stable enough to provide children with structure, safety and hope for the future.
Insights into the project
Our Approach: Local Schools, Safe Spaces and Inspiring Role Models
1. Schools Inside the Camps — Without Long or Dangerous Journeys
The Temporary Learning Spaces are located within the informal tented settlements. Children can attend classes without having to organise transport or walk long distances. This significantly improves both their safety and school attendance.
2. English and Mathematics — Complemented by Creative Activities
The daily programme combines essential academic skills with playful and creative learning activities, including crafts, painting and group games. These are places where learning is enjoyable and a sense of normality can return.
3. Local Female Teachers as Role Models
Three young women from the region lead the learning spaces. They understand the culture, the realities of life in the camps and the children’s needs. Their presence is particularly empowering and reassuring for girls.
